Learn How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

March 22, 2021

A fire extinguisher can save your life and property if a fire ever occurs in your building. By emitting a compressed gas, fire extinguishers can be used to put out fires that result from various causes. It’s important that you learn how and when to use a fire extinguisher properly to avoid additional problems

Before you begin using it, you should be aware of your extinguisher’s classification so that you’ll know what types of fires it can extinguish. Check your extinguisher to see if it’s able to put out fires that are classified under the letters A, B, C, D or K. You should also know the expiration date of your extinguisher so that you can replace it when it passes its expiry.

Regardless of what type of extinguisher you have, you can use it properly by following the PASS system:

Pull the pin
Aim the hose
Squeeze the handle
Sweep while spraying from side to side

It’s also important to remember to stand approximately eight feet back from the fire when using your extinguisher so that you can extinguish the fire safely and effectively.

Even though fire extinguishers can be used to put out many types of fires, they shouldn’t be used to try to extinguish all fires. The extinguisher should only be used on fires that are small and contained enough to handle safely. If the fire is spreading, leave the building immediately. You should also make sure that your extinguisher is fully charged and of the correct classification to put out the specific type of fire that has occurred. If the room has filled with smoke, you should try to escape from the building as quickly as possible instead of extinguishing the fire to avoid problems that result from smoke inhalation.
